Fall Safety PSA

The fall offers a number of unique and enjoyable activities for families in our area and I would like to take a moment to remind my readers and patients to be mindful of their bodies to keep safe this fall:

Sunscreen (yes, still.)

Though the days are certainly shorter and the air is cooler, the sun still sends out UVA and UVB rays which causes damage to the skin leading to aging and skin cancer. As a daily regimen, applying sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher (and re-applying as needed) is a good practice. Sunglasses and hats that are part of the summer sun protection tool kit should be used year round.

Pumpkin Carving

This is near and dear to my heart. The Shriner's Hospital (down the street from our Springfield practice) put out this PSA last year, which very nicely explains the major things to keep in mind to decorate your home safely.

Yard Work

Safe use of heavy machinery and proper protection are a must to save you from having to see us in the office or the emergency department:

- Always wear appropriate gloves and goggles when doing yard work.

- If heavy machinery gets jammed, avoid using your hands to clear out the stuck material. Even if the machine is off, the blades and gears can still have tension built up that is enough to seriously injure you. Many machines come with a device meant for clearing out the stuck material. Additionally, your machine will likely require you to do more than shut off the machine before you can safely address the problem. Review the user manual before you attempt to fix your broken machine. - Take breaks. The starts and ends of seasons are often very physically demanding times of the year. To help avoid strains, sprains, or painfully inflamed tendons and nerves, be sure to listen to your body and take breaks regularly and as needed.

Outdoor Fires and Open Burning

Many communities will have information regarding outdoor fires. In Northampton, MA, this document serves as a useful guide for outdoor fires and this page serves as nice guide to keep yourself prepared for the fires you may be planning this fall and winter.

Enjoy the season!
